Everton's Austrian Opposition in Catch 22

By: Matt Sims 18th July 2018

Everton crushed Austrian fifth-tier team ATV Irdning 22-0 in their opening pre-season friendly fixture, with two players out on loan last season seemingly out to impress new boss Marco Silva.

England U21 international Ademola Lookman scored a hat-trick, while Belgian midfielder Kevin Miralllas claimed five goals after returning from an unsuccessful spell in Greece.

Also among the goals were Oumar Niasse (4), Cenk Tosun (4), Nikola Vlasic (2), Leighton Baines, Mason Holgate and Michael Keane.

Meanwhile, Arsenal eased to an 8-0 win over non-league locals Borehamwood in their first run-out of pre-season.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang registered a first-half hat-trick, with Alexandre Lacazette and Henrik Mkhitaryan also getting on the scoresheet.

Newly-promoted Cardiff and Wolves both secured wins at the weekend.

Cardiff continued their tour of Devon and Cornwall with a 6-0 victory over Tavistock. Striker Gary Madine bagged a brace with other goals from Junior Hoilett, Jon Ralls, Bobby Reid and Danny Ward.

Wolves' 4-0 win over Young Boys of Switzerland was arguably more impressive. Ivan Cavaleiro and Leo Bonatini both scored one and set up another, with Helder Costa and Rafael Mir completing the scorers.

Christian Benteke scored the opening goal of the game for Crystal Palace in a 6-1 victory at Swedish side Halmstads.

Patrick van Aanholt weighed in with two, while Sullay Kaikai, James McArthur and Jason Puncheon also got in on the act.

Despite not getting on the scoresheet themselves, striker Alexander Sorloth assisted three of the goals, with Andros Townsend having a hand in two.

Newcastle opened their tour of Ireland by defeating St Patrick's Athletic 2-0 - the second goal coming by virtue of a Christian Atsu penalty after Marcus Gayle was adjudged to have been fouled.

West Ham won 1-0 at Wycombe with Marko Arnautovic grabbing the only goal of the game, but there was an impressive debut for Ukranian international Andriy Yarmolenko.

Jordan Ibe scored the Bournemouth equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Spanish side Sevilla - a scoreline matched by Brighton at Swiss side St Gallen with striker Tomer Hemed scoring for the Seagulls.

Although Watford winger Richarlison set up Andre Gray for an early goal in their game against FC Koln, they were ultimately also forced to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Burnley, Fulham and Liverpool were all held to goalless draws against Cork, Reading and Bury respectively.

Finally, Huddersfield slipped to a 3-0 defeat away at Accrington.
